CHAPTER ELEVEN

Good Fun Cabin #3, Brissund, Gotland, Sweden, Thursday Afternoon

Terra didn’t have time to drive back across the island. Leif was in trouble. At the risk of being pounded to a pancake by a giant with a grudge against them and a desire for things that Leif could not even offer to save his life.

She didn’t start the car. Instead, she visualized the front yard of the tiny cabin. She imagined the spot ten feet from the front door, on the little path leading to the road. She imagined the trees across the road, even though she’d be well clear of them. She imagined the little hedge separating the cabin’s front yard from the yard next door. She’d avoid that as well. She knew where she needed to go.

So she went.

With a flash of energy, Terra vanished from the driver’s seat of her car and reappeared miles away in front of the cabin. She had teleported farther than ever before. She had done it without accidentally combining her feet with the ground or impaling herself with a stray branch. She was getting stronger. Better at using the powers Freya had gifted her.

Whoever hurt her friends was about to find that out the hard way.

She slammed the front door open, ready to tangle, but instead found Mads standing by Leif, who was trying to make a call on his cell phone. Terra realized her pocket was vibrating.

“Ah, Terra, there you are!” Leif looked up from the phone to greet her when she heroically threw the door open to save her imperiled friend. “Sorry. This buffoon startled me, and I accidentally hung up.”

“What did we say about breaking in?” Terra demanded of Mads.

Mads motioned to the broken windows and cracked walls. “Seemed like an open invitation to me, mate.”

“Well, don’t do that! You need to check in with us.”

“How was I supposed to do that, luv? Call you on the phone you left at the hospital?”

“I have my phone.” Terra gestured with the device, still vibrating from Leif’s attempted call.

“Oh, sorry.” Leif saw his own face on Terra’s screen. “These things are worse than scrying mirrors.”

“You two find anything?” Mads asked when they were inside the busted cabin. “I didn’t turn up anything on Marcus. I think he’s playing it quietly, which makes sense. Means we’ll need to keep our eyes open.”

“That might be difficult. Leif thinks the amulet Scar Face wears grants him the ability to hide his magic and possibly change shape.”

Mads sighed. “You know, there was a time when I was considered one of the better talents at changing faces. Some new color, a different style, change the posture, and presto, Mads Jostad wasn’t Mads anymore. Now, with all you blokes using magic to make illusions and change forms and whatnot, it makes a bloke jealous.”

“I’m jealous, too,” Terra conceded. “Leif thinks the amulet doesn’t grant strength but gives him access to his own power.”

“That right? He’s not boosted?” Mads asked.

“More than likely, he’s at a handicap,” Leif explained.
